Meghalaya Wildlife

Meghalaya is also rich in fauna. Elephant, tiger, bear, wild-boar, leopard, golden cat, leopard cat, jungle cat, assorted kinds of deer, binturong, slow loris, various primates including caped langurs, golden langurs and hoolock gibbon, flying squirrel and giant squirrel are some of the species found in the State. Exotic and rare birds include the hornbill, partridge, pheasant, teal, snipe, geese, duck and quail. All these species are protected under the law and harming or killing them invites serious prosecution. The State has two national parks, including Nokrek and Balpakram and two Wildlife Sancturies — Nongkhyllem and Siju.
